What Are the Characteristics of a Good Sales Trainer?

August 3, 2022

For an organization to be successful, there should be training involved. Sales training is a powerful tool for developing the full potential of your sales representatives. However, every training is unique, and its success is due to the individual delivering it and their approach. Here, we’ll look into the important characteristics of a good sales trainer:

Real-World Sales Experience

A sales trainer should have real-world sales experience, as this will help them understand the challenges you face every day in the field. Having been in the field also gives them the chance to include their own experiences in training, helping to relate the material to real-life situations.

Leadership Experience

A good sales trainer is a good leader. They should be able to challenge their trainees, build their confidence and create a sense of urgency in them. This will help drive their sales team towards a common goal.

Additionally, having leadership experience will help them create a positive learning environment for their students. They should also have a way to help students learn how to build a strong leadership style, inspiring those around them.

Intellectually Curious

A good sales trainer should bring new ideas to the table. They should be able to bring forward new and innovative ways to sell, learn new methods of motivating and help the students see the world through a new lens.

They should be intellectually curious, constantly seeking new ideas, ways of communicating, and new trends and insights on the customer.

Humble

A successful sales trainer should be humble. They should not be an expert on everything and be open to getting new ideas and new knowledge. Whether hearing a new way to run sales meetings or learning a new sales technique, a good sales trainer should be open to new ideas.

They should be a good listener and willing to learn, even when talking.

Great at Presenting

A good sales trainer should be able present ideas clearly in the classroom and in day-to-day training situations. They should be good at communicating verbally and should have a good, clear speaking voice that all can hear.

They should be comfortable with doing presentations in front of larger groups, but should also be able to speak to an individual trainee face-to-face.

Consistency

A good sales trainer should be consistent. They should have a consistent message, tone and approach. This will help the students to learn and retain more of the training.

Additionally, a good sales trainer should be consistent with their personal examples and stories. If a trainer tells a story about one of their past sales, they should be able to tell it again on another day.

Finally, a good sales trainer should also be consistent with their own development. They should be improving their skills and abilities.

The Bottom Line

The traits above make up some of the key characteristics of a good sales trainer. However, if you want your training to be successful, you should make sure that the students are engaged and enjoying the training.

A good sales trainer should be able to motivate the students and make them want to learn. The training is only really successful if the students are engaged and fully participating.
